What's the difference between demurrage and detention?
Demurrage is charged when your container sits at the port or terminal past its free time (before it's picked up, or while awaiting return after unloading). Detention is charged when the container is outside the port — at your premises, being loaded or unloaded — past its own free time. They're billed separately, sometimes by different parties, and often have different free-time allowances and rates.
Where do I find the free time and per-diem rate for my shipment?
These come from your specific carrier's tariff and your contract or booking confirmation — they vary by carrier, terminal/port, container type and trade lane. This tool never assumes a figure for you; enter the free time and rate exactly as stated by your carrier, or ask TGF to help confirm them.
Can I use this if I only know the pickup and return dates, not the number of days?
Yes — switch to "Enter pickup/return dates" in either section and the tool calculates the number of days used for you from the two dates.
Is this the exact amount the carrier will invoice me?
No — this is a planning estimate built only from the numbers you enter. Actual invoices can include rounding rules, tiered per-diem rates that increase after a certain number of days, or other terms specific to your carrier and contract.
