Global container rates climb on Transpacific strength (Drewry WCI, Aug 20 2026)

Impact
Drewry's World Container Index composite reached $4,526 per 40ft container as of August 20, 2026, up 4% week-on-week — the second consecutive weekly increase (the August 13 reading was $4,339, up 1%). Shanghai–New York and Shanghai–Los Angeles rates each rose 9%, to $9,507 and $6,802 per 40ft respectively. Drewry attributes the increase to resilient Transpacific demand combined with carriers managing capacity through blank sailings.
What Shippers Should Do
Get fresh spot quotes rather than relying on rates from even a few weeks ago, especially on Transpacific-linked lanes, and book earlier given active carrier capacity management through blank sailings. For cost-sensitive shipments, re-compare FCL vs LCL economics as rates move.
